Iranian Wedding, 2005- 2008
Iranian Wedding captures the rituals and norms of wedding celebrations of the inhabitants of a small Iranian town called Karaj, not far from Tehran.
Between 2005 and 2008 I worked as a wedding photographer and was fascinated by the specific regional traditions and customs of their ceremonies. The extravagant make-up and clothing of the women, and the specific gender roles of men, were subjects that I was curious to explore.
This body of work shares my unique experience of discovering the relativity of the notion of beauty under the male gaze within this specific location and examines the extent to which culture, tradition, geography, and religion can form and alter the concept of beauty.
