Iranian Wedding, 2005 - 2008
The Iranian Wedding documents the wedding ceremonies of the residents of Karaj, a small town near Tehran in Iran. I undertook the series between 2005 and 2008. The photographs explore the extravagant make-up and clothing worn by the women, as well as the specific gender roles of men during these ceremonies. Through this series, I discovered how beauty is perceived and valued under the male gaze in this specific location. It examines how cultural, traditional, geographical, and religious factors can shape and transform the concept of beauty.
